ACT

(Acceptance & Commitment Therapy

Acceptance & Commitment Therapy, or ACT (pronounced like the word), is a modern twist on traditional CBT.  ACT has less emphasis on reducing symptoms or changing thoughts. Rather, it emphasizes noticing and allowing thoughts and feelings to occur; and developing skills to 'unhook' from them so they don't control our behaviour.  The 'Acceptance' part of ACT doesn't mean accepting our lot in life, but rather accepting our thoughts and feelings, and befriending them while we commit to being the person we want to be.  ACT includes mindful awareness of our moment-to-moment experience, using self-compassion and personal values to guide our behaviour.
